New York City's Taxi of Tomorrow is a Nissan!

The Nissan NV200 has been selected by New York City as their 'Taxi of Tomorrow', replacing the yellow sedan that has been standard for years.  The new NV200, specifically designed for this purpose, will include many innovations that make it safer, eco-friendly and more convenient for drivers and passengers alike. It comes equipped with a smart airbag that works around the partition, doors that slide back instead of swing open, anti-bacterial seats, charging stations for mobile devices and swing out steps for ease of entry.
It is anticipated the first 'Taxi of Tomorrow' will be introduced into service in late 2013.

Nissan will be able to manufacture the NV200 to run on electric-only power starting in 2017. The City will test the use of all-electric powered taxis starting in 2012 with six fully electric Nissan Leafs - provided free of charge - to road test electric vehicles. If the pilot proves successful, the City will explore the possibility of the wider use of electric powered taxis.
