As Nissan dealers serving Fishers, IN and neighboring communities, we’re proud to represent a brand that has a long-standing culture of innovation because it produces many useful, practical ideas for Nissan vehicles. One idea that was recently inspired by the Nissan brand’s culture of innovation has the very real potential to save lives.

Two mothers, who also happen to be engineers working for the Nissan brand, recently developed a new Rear Door Alert. Elsa Foley and Marlene Mendoza worked together to conceive of and create the automaker’s Rear Door Alert, which is the first of its kind. The Rear Door Alert is designed to remind drivers to check their back seat in case they forgot a child, pet, or something else that shouldn’t be left unattended in an automobile.

If the Rear Door Alert system senses that a rear door was opened or closed at the beginning of a trip, but not at the end of the trip, the system will send a warning on the car’s instrument panel. The system will then issue distinctive chirps through the vehicle’s horn.

While the Rear Door Alert isn’t available on Nissan cars like the 2017 Nissan Maxima just yet, it will be soon. The Rear Door Alert will make its first appearance on the 2018 Nissan Pathfinder as a standard feature. The new Nissan Pathfinder is slated to go on sale in September, 2017.

"There's a culture of innovation along with the Nissan Intelligent Mobility mission that really encourages employees around the world to seek out new ideas every day," said Mendoza. "We're thankful that we were able use our perspectives as moms, and our backgrounds as engineers, to bring forward an idea that is now going into production – providing drivers with a reminder to check their back seats."
